Club Row is just North of the City of London, yet this site had lain unused for fifty years, passed over by developers because of right of light restrictions and a right of way across the site. The solution was to use an atrium plan that along with light wells and a pavement light brings sunlight pouring in to the basement and unites the living spaces through a three storey high volume, bringing a sense of grandeur to this small house. As the building effectively fills the site a roof terrace provides a delightful garden in the sky and the house embraces the mature plane trees that line the street by the highly glazed front facade. The house has been extensively published as an exemplar of innovative housing and featured in the 2000 RIBA housing design awards, as well as being highly commended in the 2001 Galvanising association architecture awards. built area : 125 sqm
